James “Vell” Rives: On the Issues
Academics
Graduates must be prepared for real-world jobs or college. I want to see all Arlington students making measurable gains, outpacing their peers in Virginia and beyond. I support equity of opportunity, getting extra help to kids who need it, and performance-based grading of work, including age-appropriate homework.
Mental Health
I support our school counselors and universal mental health screening. We also need to foster community, limiting overuse of screens and avoiding grim, formal presentations on self-harm and mental illness—that time could be used for games, creative projects, and outdoor time that actually reduce stress and build friendships.
Substance Abuse
Substance Abuse has surged among Arlington students. Overdoses continue inside the high schools, sometimes with tragic results. While continuing preventive education and harm reduction strategies (like naloxone spray), I support aggressive early intervention to change the life trajectories for students using drugs.
Technology
Artificial intelligence (AI, like ChatGPT) is here to stay. Students must be taught to use it properly, and how to do the work on their own when they need to. I will fight industry marketing and data collection in our technology programs. I support the systemwide “Away for the Day” policy for students’ personal devices.
Resource Officers
The school board removed our SRO’s despite favorable reviews from every demographic group. We should reinstate the program. We should also continue to develop and fund alternatives to student removal and/or prosecution, such as in-school suspension and county juvenile diversion programs.
Support All Students
Inclusion is a good thing, but inclusion goes too far when it means males in girls' locker rooms. We should revise the current gender policy to provide girls exclusive spaces while providing appropriate, respectful accommodations for students who need them. Every student deserves to be welcomed and treated with kindness, and there must be negative consequences for bullying.
Stewardship of Resources
A fresh voice is desperately needed here to ensure transparency and real conversations. Maintenance and upgrading of older facilities have moved too slowly in favor of expensive new projects. I also want to see administration streamline in favor of student-facing staff positions.
Staff Retention
We must offer competitive pay and benefits for our region, but that’s not all. A supportive environment and rewarding work are essential; see all of the above!
